Conventions of Film Noir

These are the key conventions that would be found in Film Noir. Some of these I found by doing research on the internet, but others I found from watching various Film Noir productions.

Cinematography

  • Low key lighting
  • Filmed in black & white
  • Low & high angle shots
  • Tilted angle shots (Dutch angle)
  • Extreme close-ups
  • Shots of the characters reflections or partially obscured
  • Deep focusing

Editing

  • Flashbacks
  • Non-linear
  • Jump cuts
  • Continuity editing

Sound

  • A voice over provided by the protagonist
  • Jazz music
  • Heavy breathing
  • Silence to create tension
  • Emphasis on background noises of the city

Mise-en-scene

  • Low-key lighting (chiaroscuro)
  • High contrast images
  • Wet streets
  • Dark alleys and streets
  • Men in suits and hats
  • Cigarettes
  • Pistols
  • Urban/city locations
