These are the key conventions that would be found in Film Noir. Some of these I found by doing research on the internet, but others I found from watching various Film Noir productions.
Cinematography
- Low key lighting
- Filmed in black & white
- Low & high angle shots
- Tilted angle shots (Dutch angle)
- Extreme close-ups
- Shots of the characters reflections or partially obscured
- Deep focusing
Editing
- A voice over provided by the protagonist
- Jazz music
- Heavy breathing
- Silence to create tension
- Emphasis on background noises of the city
Mise-en-scene
- Low-key lighting (chiaroscuro)
- High contrast images
- Wet streets
- Dark alleys and streets
- Men in suits and hats
- Cigarettes
- Pistols
- Urban/city locations
- Women wearing dresses and red lipstick
